AEP Texas stands prepared as Tropical Storm Nicholas makes its way up through the Gulf of Mexico

September 13, 2021

AEP Texas continues to monitor Tropical Storm Nicholas as it makes its way up through the Gulf of Mexico to its predicted landfall near Port Lavaca late Monday night. Crews are prepared to respond to customer power outages from the Rio Grande Valley to Victoria. Tropical Storm Nicholas is expected to bring heavy rains, flooding, and power outages to parts of the southern AEP Texas service territory.

AEP Texas has made plans to bring additional resources from other districts and remains on standby to begin damage assessment and begin the restoration effort once it is safe to do so.

In the meantime, please consider the following preparation and safety tips:

  • Consider any downed power line energized and dangerous. Do not touch anything in contact with the line, such as trees, fences or puddles of water. Because of the likelihood that the storm will cause my lines to fall, customers are asked to keep their children and pets inside during and after the storm.
  • Customers on life support systems or other medical equipment, which rely on electricity, are reminded to have a backup plan for situations where prolonged outages may occur.
  • Being prepared ahead of any storm is the first step to keeping your home and family safe. Have an emergency outage kit on hand that includes:
    • Flashlights and fresh batteries;
    • Battery-powered radios;
    • Candles, matches or lighters;
    • Water for drinking and cooking;
    • Camping equipment like sleeping bags and lanterns;
    • Non-perishable food and a manual can opener;
    • Manufacturers' instructions for your generator (if you have one);
    • Instructions on how to manually open your garage door; and
    • Important over-the-counter medicines.

Please follow AEP Texas on Facebook and Twitter for current updates.
