Kentucky Power continues efforts to restore power to customers following a major winter snow storm that dumped wet, heavy snow across the entire region Friday and Saturday. At the height of the snow storm, one of the worst in the company's history, almost 80,000 customers lost electricity service. While crews work diligently to assess and repair outage cases, progress has been slow as poor road conditions and downed trees have made travel and access to some areas difficult. As the weather clears and outside resources continue to arrive, greater restoration progress is expected. At 3 PM today, 64,189 customers remained without power.
 
Due to the extensive damage the snow has caused to power lines, utility poles and other electrical equipment -- in addition to the high number of individual outage cases -- Kentucky Power estimates it could be as late as December 27 before every customer is returned to service.
 
Company officials continue to find downed power lines and broken utility poles throughout the area and caution eastern Kentucky residents to never approach downed power lines or wires of any type. No matter how harmless a downed wire may appear it should be considered energized and dangerous. Report all downed power lines to Kentucky Power at (800) 572-1113 or notify local emergency or law enforcement officials immediately. Never approach or touch anything that comes in contact with a downed power line. Keep in mind that the snow may cover downed power lines.
 
As of 3 p.m. today, the following outage numbers were estimated by the company. Company officials explained these numbers can continue to rise and fall as the storm continues to manifest itself and new outage situations are identified and addressed.
