Swift Response Prevents Tragedy During Pole Fire Response

15 de Septiembre de 2025

On a rainy day in Weslaco, Line Mechanic Daniel Pacheco responded to a pole fire caused by a detached primary wire that typically carries 12,000 volts of electricity. Upon arriving at the scene, Pacheco noted that although the fire had been extinguished, smoke was still rising from the ground, prompting him to investigate further. He discovered that the end of the primary wire remained energized and was in dangerous contact with the wet ground, creating a hazardous situation.

Demonstrating his expertise and composure, Pacheco recognized the risks involved and took a moment to assess his surroundings before proceeding. Just as he was preparing to neutralize the live wire, he observed an individual crossing the caution tape and approaching the energized area. Acting quickly, Pacheco shouted a warning to prevent potential injury and then safely cut the primary wire while calling for backup to replace it.

Pacheco's swift action and attentiveness averted what could have been a tragic accident, highlighting the critical importance of situational awareness in hazardous environments. His dedication to safety earned him the Good Catch of the Month award from the Rio Grande Valley Safety Committee, underscoring the value of vigilance in the line of duty.
