AEP Texas responds to widespread outages following severe weather

May 9, 2025

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (May 9, 2025) - AEP Texas crews continue to restore power after strong thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and high winds impacted south Texas overnight and early Friday. The most significant impact occurred in the Alice area - which reported more than 5,000 outages.

Crews and mutual assistance have been mobilized to restore power as safely and quickly as possible.

AEP Texas urges customers to remain alert and follow these important safety guidelines:

  • Treat all downed power lines as energized and dangerous. Do not touch anything that may be in contact with the line, including trees, fences, or puddles of water. Keep children and pets inside during and after the storm and stay at least ten feet away from any downed power line.
  • Customers who rely on life support systems or other electrical medical equipment are reminded to have a backup plan for prolonged outages.
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using portable generators. Most manufacturers recommend placing portable generators outdoors and away from windows to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

AEP Texas will continue providing updates as more information becomes available. For outage updates, safety tips, and restoration information, visit aeptexas.com.
