Following the completion of the area transmission study, AEP Texas will present their findings to ERCOT, participating in a comprehensive regional planning initiative across RGV in collaboration with other Transmission Operators. AEP Texas is looking beyond San Antonio with it's new 765kV transmission line. Long-term plans are on the table to extend the project into the Rio Grande Valley. The RGV extension is not expected until 2030 or later, but planning is already underway.
AEP Texas Director of Customer Experience Matt Gerick says the RGV will need major transmission upgrades to keep up with electrical demand in the coming years. "The 765kV line is the most effective option to get us there," he said.
AEP is conduting engineering studies and system upgrades to prepare for future growth. For now, the line ends near San Antonio. But AEP Texas's message is clear: The Rio Grande Valley is next. To learn more about the planned 765kV transmission line, read the following articles:
