Responsiveness
During an active wildfire, we may need to de-energize affected circuits to reduce the risk of injury or loss of life. We take this step only when urgently requested by civil authorities or first responders, or when fire damage causes the electric system to operate unsafely.
Fire Risk Protocols
As a first step, our field employees take extra care to identify potential hazards, work safely and avoid creating sparks. Precautions include turning off idle vehicles and limiting the use of hot tools such as chainsaws or welding torches.
Conservative Operations
During conservative operations, we disable automatic reclosing - the feature that would usually restore power after a brief interruption - to reduce the potential for new sparks. Most customers won't notice when conservative operations are enabled. However, if an outage occurs, it might take a bit longer to turn power back on while we make certain conditions are safe.
Emergency De-Energization
During an active fire, we may need to disable affected circuits to mitigate the risk of injury or death. These outages occur either at the urgent request of first responders or when fire damage causes the system to operate in an unsafe condition.
Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS)
PSPS involves proactively disabling power to a targeted area prior to an ignition event, when forecasted conditions indicate a high probability of a wildfire, and we must act to protect lives.
We consider weather like wind and humidity, and climate conditions like drier vegetation when considering a PSPS. It is the final option after considering all others when the public safety is at risk.
