AEP Texas employees recently spent a day at Delia Gonzalez Garcia Elementary in Rio Grande City teaching children about electrical safety and the opportunities they can pursue if they choose to work in the utility industry.
"We try to support the community, especially schools, when they call and ask us to join their efforts," Manny Ruiz, Jr., Rio Grande City Distribution System Supervisor, said. "Our main goal is to inspire the young ones."
The group spent a day with first through fifth graders, showing them safety equipment and the vehicles used at AEP Texas.
"Our Line Crew leaders now receive the invitations from the schools. They organize the events and ensure we have the staff and equipment to make them happen," Ruiz said.
Ruiz said that Rio Grande City’s location makes a company presence paramount for building a future workforce.
“It’s really important that we put ourselves in front of these kids, educators, and families,” Ruiz said.
"Rio Grande City can feel a bit isolated. We need to show these future utility workers that opportunities are right here for them at home."
